Migrating SMG to different environment

I need a solution

Hello,

We are currently running Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.5.2-3 on our old VMware vSphere 5.5 based environment. We have one VM running both Control Center and Scanner. We are planning to migrate/reinstall/whatever Symantec Messaging Gateway on our new VMware vSphere 6.0 U1a based environment. This is our planned migration procedure.

1. Take backup of Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.5.2-3 on our old VMware vSphere 5.5 based environment through SMG web interface. Download that backup locally.
2. Shutdown Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.5.2-3 on our old VMware vSphere 5.5 based environment and create VMware snapshot.
3. Turn on Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.5.2-3 on our old VMware vSphere 5.5 based environment and upgrade it to 10.5.4-4.
4. After successfull upgrade to version 10.5.4-4, upgrade Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.5.4-4 on our old VMware vSphere 5.5 based environment to 10.6.0-7.
5. Take backup of Symantec Messaging Gateway 10.6.0-7 on our old VMware vSphere 5.5 based environment through SMG web interface. Download that backup locally.
6. Prepare new VM for SMG on our new VMware vSphere 6.0 U1a based environment using SMG 10.6.0-5 OSRestore iso and upgrade it to 10.6.0-7.
7. Restore backup from upgraded SMG 10.6.0-7 on our old VMware vSphere 5.5 environment to new SMG VM with 10.6.0-7 on our new VMware vSphere 6.0 U1a enviroment.

My questions is:
Since there is no 10.6.0-7 OSRestore image available at this moment, I need to prepare new VM with 10.6.0-5 and upgrade it to 10.6.0-7. To do that I need to configure its network settings. Those network settings need to be different than those on our current production VM. After I do restore in step 7, will network settings from backup take over or not? Are there network settings / device name in backup? If not, will it be enough to go through procedure described in http://www.symantec.com/connect/articles/change-ip... or I will need to do something else? I've done a test restore and one step of restoring from different appliance described in SMG online help is to disable and enable host in Administration/Hosts/Configuration to restore scanner settings. Since our VM serves as both Control Center and Scanner, when disabling host I receive message that host running Control Center cannot be disabled. Could that be the reason network settings and device name end up not being restored?

Best regards, MSMSMS

I need a solution

Hello all

We have the following setup:

1 x Virtual Controll Center (10.5.3-4)
2 x Scanner Appliance Model 8360 (10.5.3.-4)

As we are unable to install any version above 10.5.3-4, we would like ro replace our appliances with virtual scanners. As fair as I know (online help, google, this forum..), there is no way to restore the configuration of a scanner to another scanner. Seems like SMG is only able to backup up and restore the configuration of the control center.

Is there no easy way to replace our appliances with virtual machines without reconfiguring the scanners from zero?

Regards

Marcel

I need a solution

Hello,

I this problem.

I Configure the SMG to quarantine the outbound mail detected as spam.

This work well and block spam email to go out.

But there are some mail that was detected as spam but ar not spam (false positive)

I submit this mail "as not spam" but continue to mark as spam the email sent from a specific address.

How I can understand why the mail is marked as Spam ? Is a problem of type of client used ?

TLS communication for quarantine message

I need a solution

Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to secure mail communication between scanner and control center?

Config must be scanner(s) and cc seperated on different hosts.

To get you an idea what i've done: Just use quarantine or informational incidents. By using it incidents will get forwarded to the control center and stored there. In addition, releasing a mail from quarantine is unsecure, too.

telnet cc 41025 gets me the right way, but cc isnt offering starttls.

Does anyone know a way to use TLS the smtp communication?

Many thanks

Thomas

Issues with Exchange 2010 following upgrade of SMG to 10.6.0-7

I need a solution

Has anyone else come across any issues after they've upgraded their Symantec Messaging Gateway (SMG) from 10.5.4-4 to 10.6.0-7?

I did the update this morning and since then I've started seeing a number of "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender" items in the Exchange 2010 Queue Viewer. Each item has the following error message when you open the Properties:

Last Error: 400 4.4.7 The server responded with: 550 5.6.2 SMTPSEND.BareLinefeedsAreIllegal; message contains bare linefeeds, which cannot be sent via DATA. The failure was replaced by a retry response because the message was marked for retry if rejected.

Each instance appears to also correspond with an 8010 Event in the Exchange server's Application Log:

A message with the Internal Message ID *number* was rejected by the remote server.  This message will be deferred and retried because it was marked for retry if rejected.  Other messages may also have encountered this error.

I can confirm that we had no 8010 errors in the Application event log before today and it would appear that these undelivered emails actually clog up the email flow, unless they are either suspended or removed (with or without an NDR)

Oddly enough it only appears to effect emails that are being Journaled and even then it's only some Journaled emails and not all of them.

At this point I haven't been able to find any log entries on the SMG server, but I'm also aware that I might not be looking in the correct place.

Before performing the update, I checked for known issues and this certainly wasn't listed.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Cheers

John

Hi, I am trying to deploye SMG in my exchange 2010 environment and want to know about below two things.

1- I am replacing MS forefornt for exchange which is installes on edge server and behind edge server I have hub transport servers. Now my question is what will be the best position to place SMG? should I remove edge servers and replace them with SMG or SMG should be placed before edge servers for inbound emails.

2-How would I configure smtp connectors in exchange 2010 hubtransport/edge server for SMG.

False positive Email reputation for our entire IP block

Hi Team,

We are an ISP called Vibe Communications reside in New Zealand. Multiple clients reported they are unable to send email and we found majority of ip block of us is black listed.

14.1.32.0/19 is block of ip address we are using.

14.1.37.18 is one of the ip address failed to send any email and most of customer within this ip address range are having issue sending email. These IP address includes Provider staff personal IP address who is very security concious. We've checked other organization who does ip reputation check and noticed none of them has blocked entire ip address range including 14.1.37.18 but Symantec has.

Can you please check 14.1.32.0/19 if they are blacklited and get them removed? The list is far too many and we can't do it individually.

Regards,

Sam

Local Bad sender domains don't work for all emails

I need a solution

Hi,

on Messaging Gateway 10.5.4.4, in Reputation/policiese/bad senders/local bad sender domains, i've add 579 spam domains.

Problem is that some of them are bypassed from email and them arrive.

For example, i've added "credemonline.it" but if the email is with this sender "servizio.clienti@intesasanpaolo.com"<info.44063@credemonline.it>, it will be delivery without rules check.

How is it possible?

Thank's in advance

I need a solution

Hi All,

we are currently working on to intergrate Messaging Gateway with ArcSight SIEM. i am able to send the syslog to ArcSight but it is not able to recognise the format of the log and just displays the raw syslog event.

I made a support ticket and they informed me that they don't have any document for intergation with either ArcSIght or anyother syslog solution.

so i just want to ask has anyone be able to integrate SMS with SIEM or syslog and get the proper events not just raw events.

Messaging Gateway Licensing Query

I need a solution

Hi Everyone,

Could you please tell me how does Brightmail Messaging Gateway licensing work?

A. If i have 5000 users who send and receive mails using the messaging gateway, do i need 5000 Symantec Messaging Gateway licenses?

B. Does it depend on mailboxes or users? If mailboxes does it consider active mailboxes or inactive mailboxes aswell?

C. Does the Symantec Messaging Gateway have to deployed on a server through which the mails will be routed or is it supposed to be deployed on the end user machines, through which the mails are sent?

D. If a user has three mailboxes, does it require the user to have one symantec messaging gateway licenses or three messaging gateway licenses?

Thanks in Advance!

Help!  We have been running SMG for several years without any issues.  This past Friday I upgraded to 10.6.0-7 and now it's classifyign a lot of valid emails as spam.  I really don't have the time to keep watching the spam quarantine and releasing valid emails every 15 minutes.  Does anyone know what's going on with that and how to makew it stop???

We're running version 10.5.4-4 of Messaging gateway with the Disarm feature enabled. It appears the feature is not working for .docm format. We have received several emails and the Macro is not removed.

Is Docm supported under this feature?

Thank You.

Hi,

We're having issue sending (replying) email to one domain as delivery keeps failing and SMG records this error: 554 unknown user - unsolicited 1x.

I don't see my domain on any blacklist. I think it has something to do with the users end but I want to doublecheck.

Please let me know.

SMG version is 10.5.1-2

Thanks.

I am having problem with some gmail users. Getting these errors:

Technical details of permanent failure:
The recipient server did not accept our requests to connect. Learn more at https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7720
[xxx.xxx.com. xxx.xx.xx.x: socket error]

Any mail that comes in, arrive on the symantec messaging gateway. I would like to know whether there is a way to troubleshoot the problem. For example log files having the details.

Strange thing though is that I just tested with my gmail account and mail delivered immediately. We are having problem only with a few users.

Thanks to help.
