Symantec Brightmail

I need a solution

Hi,

We have a symantec brightmail virtual server setup on our network and have one issue after updating it, our sister company's emails relay to us that gets scanned by the brightmail appliance. the issue is that it is blocking all of the mails and the scanning is very aggressive on that domain, is there a way we can change the aggressiveness of the scanning on that domain what can you recommend we change on the symantec brightmail appliance to stop the blocking of that domains emails.

           We have been getting a number of log entries since upgrading to 10.0.3-3.

ec_message_select_binding_by_group() NULL domain found.

         Everything seems to be running fine, but due to the number of these logs that we are getting, we wanted to make sure that there isn't any underlying issue.

Has anyone else run into this?

Expert Advice require for Upgrade Old Appliance 8360 to New Appliance 8380 , Current scenario is that Having two Symantec messaging gateway Appliances 8360 with 9.5 version. One having control center + Scanner and Another having just Scanner.

We got two New Appliances 8380 to install in our enviroment with version 10.5 (latest). want to make same secnario  like one will contain control center + scanner and second just Scanner. And need all upgrade side by side after upgrade will done successfully remove Old Appliances.

Number of Public IPs needed for SMG

Dears,

Good Day !

im currently in the process of installing SMG appliance, and i want to make sure wether i can use 1 public IP for SMG (for Inbound / Outbound mail flow) while using a second public IP for owa on Exchange.

I've read on the SMG guide that i can use 1 public IP for inbound and outbound, by configuring different ports.. but didnt really get that part..

Is it like configuring inbound mail on port 25 on the firewall and configure outbound mail on port 30 for example??

Appreciate your help..

"WARNING - NOT VIRUS SCANNED" issue

Hello,

Recently, a user complaint that an email message shows "WARNING - NOT VIRUS SCANNED" in the subject line while the same senders did send to him many time in the past without this problem. I can figure out the sender should be using Lotus Notes 7.0.3 version.

I know that the malformed MIME message will be labelled as "unscannable" message. However, Lotus Notes should be one of the famous email client which supposely not created the malformed MIME message. Do you think there is any other possibilites causing the problem? 

PS. We did not change any configure in the past year.

Good sender being tagged with [Marketing Mail]

I need a solution

I added a domain to the "Local Good Sender Domains" list, but messages from this domain are still being tagged with the [Marketing Mail] prefix in the subject line. I used the format domain.com, should I use the format @domain.com? Is there another place where I should make a change? This is Messaging Gateway 10.5.1.

Messaging Gateway Appliance

I need a solution

Hi,

 

I have 30K+ mailboxes and i am going to install Messaging Gateway 8380 Appliance as 2 Scanner for inbound and 2 Scanner for Outbund. Now my question is can i use thses 4 scanners as an inbound / outbound scanner ? means each scanner has to be configure as a inbound / outbound role. or as i have 30K+ mailboxes so i cannot use both roles in a same scanner appliance. Kindly advise.

TLS cipher support

I need a solution

I have a customer looking for a complete list of ciphers we support on our messaging gateway.  Is that officially documented anywhere?

I can use https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/ for https tests but I don't know of a similar tool for smtp over tls.  http://sourceforge.net/projects/sslscan/ failed to connect with --starttls over port 25 to my external scanners.

I am getting the output of openssl ciphers -v but have no way to know which ones the java libaries messaging gateway uses will try.

Is this officially documented anywhere?  We are running 10.5.1

All senders classfied as Bad reputation, Reject SMTP Connection for everything

I need a solution

Hi -

 

I have SMG 10.5.1-2 running on vmware.  Everything was working fine until 11am yesterday, when SMG started rejecting all email as bad reputation.

 The only way i have been able to get mail flowing thru SMG is to disable all options under reputation > bad senders.  How can i troubleshoot this problem?

I have 2 Scanners and 1 Control Center, I set for keep log 90 Days via control center since 1 month ago but to I query log 
and report it show only 7 days. I checked the disk space, it's OK !

Please help me to define and solve it.

SMG 10.5 Dictionary Q?

Is this still correct?  In that the dictionaries will match part words?  I seem to have two SMGs set up identically and one is matching part words and one isn't, currently a bit baffled and I'm not sure what the correct behaviour is.

Symantec Messaging Gateway Scheduled Tasks Failed

About two weeks ago we upgraded the messaging gateway to 10.5.1, there has not been any issues except yesterday and today I received the message notification below:

 

 ======================= ALERT NOTIFICATION ================================               

The following Scheduled Tasks have Failed : 

  Task : Content Incident Folder Notification ( Informational Incidents )  
  Host : 
  Last Run Time : Tuesday, Feb 04, 2014 11:00:00 PM CST

Details about this failure have been logged to BrightmailLog.log. Access this Control Center 
console log on the Logs page of the Symantec Messaging Gateway Control Center.

Not sure what this means and what I should do?

SMG Local Good Sender Domains Not Working

Hi all,

We're running Symantec Messaging Gateway v 10.0.2.  A user reported that she wasn't receiving emails from a particular sender.  The SMG message audit logs showed the emails were being deleted with the Symantec Global Bad Sender verdict.  I added that email address to the Local Good Sender Domains list, with the actions of "Bypass all content filtering policies" and "Deliver message normally."  But the emails are still getting deleted, now with the verdict of "Bypass all content filtering policies, Delete message."  Can someone explain why this is happening?  Does the Symantec Global Bad Sender list trump any local whitelists that I create on the device?  Thanks in advance for any insight.

in the  appliance show  the version 10.0.3 but in the symantec fileconnect is version 10.5 too...

SMG SNMP Value Unit and importance

Hi Guys,

I a bit confused what the different meaning and unit is of the Queues we monitor via SNMP. Could anyone explain what they mean and what unit it is expressed in?

So each of the three queues (inbound outbound and delivery) have these items, 

 

Queue connections: I asume the number of connections this queue has, value is just a number. OK what would you set as maximum before it is considered as error?

Queue Data Rate: Is this the amount of data that is being tranfered to the next hop (mail server or other queue)? What is the unit? Kbps? its pretty low ranging from 0-20. What maximum would I set as error

Queue deffered mesages: Is this the amount of messages that are being dropped due to for example spam? Unit probably is just the number? What maximum as error?

Queue Message Rate: Is this the amount of messages being passed through the queue? unit just a number? What maximum as error?

Queue Size: size of all messages in the queue? in KB, Kb? what maximum as error?

Queued messages: number of messages in the queue? just a number? what maximum as error?

 

What of these 6 would be your choice to monitor and what not?

 

would appreciate your input as best practise very much

SNMP queries sometimes have no response. is there a limit to queries per minute on SMG?

I need a solution

Hi,

We have 26 SNMP monitors on our SMG's, CPU, memory, Disk space, Queue info...

 

When I have about 15 enabled all is fine, but when I enable all 26, it seems to be too much for the SMG to handle. all sensors poll once every minute.

Is there a limit to SNMP requests/minute what the SMG allows? Or is it the fact the CPU is always around 99%

the 99% part is dus to stunnel consuming that much CPU and we planned to upgrade all boxes to the latest version, so if that is the reason why snmp polls encounter no response then that will probably be the solution, but if you guys have any other idea, please share

SMG 10.0.3 to 10.5.1 on unsupported hardware platform

I need a solution

I need a way to upgrade an unsupported hardware platform in order to migrate to a supported one (e.g. upgrade, backup database externally, restore to fresh 10.5.1 install). Specifically, the new target platform is Hyper-V so there is no way to do a 10.0.3 install and upgrade from there.

Is there a way to force the upgrade and have the installer ignore the hardware? Is there another option?

BTW, the source platform is 64-bit capable and supports all other 10.5 minimum requirements.
