How to block external domains from sending mails to internal distribution lists

Hi All,

Good Day!

We have a Symantec Messaging Gateway, relaying inbound mails. There are a few distribution lists created at the Exchange level.

The requirement is that we do not want external domains to send mails to the DL. However individual members of that DL must continue to receive mails from external domains.

Is there a way to achieve this with the SMG. SMG is running software version 9.5.3-3.

Please assist.

Hi,

User Arthur Martin left company already his email address was amartin@xxx.com; I have already delete his email account. Problem now is that though the email account has been deleted user amartin@yyy.com is receiving the email. Both xxx.com and yyy.com are local domains. I have even blacklisted amartin@xxx.com but email is still delivered. I decided to enable recipient validation for domain xxx.com and yyy.com; but email is still delivered. Can someone please help me out.

Other spam filtering solutions I've used have the ability to send end users a daily email of what was blocked.  How can I enable this on SMG 10.5.1?

One of our client domain have been detected as spam in SMG. I already add the domain in Reputation --> Good Sender.

Is there any better way to whitelist a domain?

Hi guys,

In my environment now, we got one spam email outbreak. the worst thing about it is only the top management received it.

its a blank email, no body no attachment just a subject. the sender address is using gmail domain and the username always change. 

SMG doesnt detect this email as apa spam and deliver it normally.

how to stop this issue? or how i want to trace the sender so i cant blacklist or detect who is sending it.

Hello everybody,

I just want to update my 2 brghtmail server.

My public dns that has two mx record and both point to the brightmail server.

20mail1.pepeescamoso.com.ar8.8.19.905 min
 

The both brightmail have the same ip address and both have control center and scanner. But the brightmail server that act like backup, has different weight in the dns as you can see in the picture and  is shutdown.

My dude is how can update the brigtmail server without loose any mail, because i read some article that i my stopt recive incomming mail, but if i do this i will lost emails and i can not power on the other brightmail becasue it has the same ip address than the server i must update.

What is the best way to do this ? 

1.- Change the ip address of one brighmail server and then update one , stoping the incoming mail ?? If i do this how can i say to brightmal that must forward the email to the backup brightmail ?

 

2.- I must change the ip address of one brighmail server and then update one, stoping the incoming mail and the SMTP protocol will detect this fail (revoke incoming mail) and resend the email to the secondary mx server.

 

I hope someone can help me.

And, I tried sent to this domain with gmail is OK, mxtoolbox can resolve mx record.

Spoofing URLs not blocked?!

We have an issue with SMG 10.5.1 where spoofed HTML URLs don't get blocked.

For example:

<a href="http://www.site1.com/suspectPage.php">http://www.bbc.com/nonsuspiciousPage.htm</a>

Is there any way to block this? The actual emails themselves seem to pass through with malformed MIME type though, with a 66byte txt attachment.

These are the emails pretending to come from companies house, if anyones seen them.

I realy appreciacte any help regarding the two issues mentioned below:

1st Issue:

I tried to search all the spam emails having the subject 'Delayed e-mail on Instagram' using the Message audit log feature and it has come up with emails having  the subject(Example:hey, you have delayed eamils on skype) containing any of those words in the search criteria. Now I only want the emails contaning only ,specificaly the subject:Delayed e-mail on Instagram.

Can any one please help me to find out the eamil containing a specific subject but nothing else. 

2nd Issue:

How can I search Email contaning specific keywords (example:"medical") in thier body (content)

Messaging Gateway - Virtual or Appliance - Licensing

I have a very specific question about licensing for the Symantec Mesaging Gateway (as below):

 

1) Can this product be used to resell (hosted) mail filtering? 

 

For Example: If i were to buy 500 Licenses would i be able to use those 500 licenses to provide message filtering (av/as) for 500 mailboxes from 10 different companies? The users who i am filtering for would work for different companies than me. 

I understand that symantec has a cloud based solution but thats not what i am talking about.

Symantec BrightMail blocking my server

I need a solution

I just hired a new dedicated server to host my business' data and mail services, and I'm having problems to send e-mails to some receipents.

Some contacts on @hotmail.com are currently unreachable, I contacted them and they said my IP 177.153.8.97 is being blocked on Symantec BrightMail.

Some contacts that use Symantec's messagelabs.com services are denying my server too.

I submitted a removal request to ipremoval.sms.symantec.com but 72 hours later I am still blocked in both services.

 


Where the logs stored in the Web security Gateway and How we can pull them from the console

Hi , 

 

I'm looking for a way to pull the original logs that are stored in the Web Gateway appliance. As far as I know , what we are seeing in the GUI , is the export of what is stored in the Appliance. I want to be able to pull all the fields of logs from where it's originally stored (As a end user). 

Any idea would be appreciated

SMG 10.0.3-3 - one user not receiving external email

I need a solution

I am running an SMG 10.0.3-3 virtual appliance on Vmware ESXi 3.5.

Recently one of my fairly new users reported that external mail was no longer reaching him. First I checked my internal mail server (has a habit of setting quotas for new users) and quickly determined that no quota was set and no external mail for the user was reaching the internal server so I looked at the mail gateway.

If I go to Administration -> Find User, his email address is successfully found from the LDAP server and he is in the default policy group with all other users.

If I go to Status -> Message Audit Logs and filter by recipient on his username, it returns "Application Error". Initially it did not do this if I searched within the last hour only, but after I tried to sent him an email from an external account, it then returns "Application Error" for the last hour too. If I filter for other usernames I get the log entries as normal.

I have rebooted the virtual appliance a couple of times (at one point messages for other users were held up, but showing in the logs) but the problem persists.

Anyone got any idea what could be wrong or how I can fx it?

SMG Upgrade

Hello,

 

While Upgrading SMG which is on 10.0.2 > 10.0.3 > 10.0.5 . with a Contorl Center and two scanners, all of them are running on a seperate appliance.

When a scanner is being upgrade then you have to stop the mail flow to that scanner. While this is happening are mails not being accepted or delievered ?

How the scanners are updated by making sure that mails are not rejected.

I need a solution

I need solution for following:

I have two Appliances 83600 , having first one Control Center + Scanner and Second one just Scanner.

The current version 9.5.2 and need to upgrade 10.0.3, I read the Symantec Support Articles to Upgrade first Control Center then Scanner and best way to Upgrade version through SSH Command.

Please kindly guide me to upgrade first our 1st Appliance which have control center + Scanner, then 2nd Appliance which have just Scanner?

I have also one issue; when i tried to donwload latest version like 10.0.3 from SSH our appliance get long long time.

use command:

1-update list

2-update download

after use these commands our first appliance took almost 6 hours to download. but second Appliance still stuck on:

GEt:288 http://localhost i386/stable sms -smtp-modules 10.0.3-1 [511MB]

we used to check via command like (tail -f update.log)

Also approximate time require for installation from 9.5.2 to 10.0.3 ?????

Kindly Help me to re download new version 10.0.3 and installation.

 

 

 

Unable to release mails from Spam Quarantine

I need a solution

Hi All,

We have two SMG gateways; one for inbound and other for outbound mail delivery. Both are running software version 9.5.3-3. 

The problem is that we have a lot of outbound mails in the Spam Quarantine. When I try to release them, I get the error  "Cannot release the message. It has either been released or was unable to contact the SMTP host."

When I run the command nslookup -querytype=mx <mydomain> i get a public IP. 

I have set the Control Center's SMTP Host setting to 'Use existing non-local relay settings'. Under the Host Configuration, for Outbound Non-Local Mail Delivery I have selected Use MX Lookup for non-local domain mail.

I have read the KB article TECH89134, but could not really figure out how to go about it. I tried the solution 3 but did not work and was still getting the error when trying to release mails.

Could some one please help me with this. Thank you.
